Doug Ford thinks he's above the law – we must fight back
To say a lot has happened in the past 24 hours would be an understatement.
As I’m sure you’ve heard, yesterday morning we received the positive news that the legal challenge against Bill 5 – Doug Ford’s legislation to cut the number of Toronto’s wards from 47 to 25 - was successful. Judge Belobaba ruled that the legislation is unconstitutional and that the Province had “clearly crossed the line.”
This victory was fought for by Torontonians who stood up against Ford and his undemocratic attack on our city. They fought on behalf of the 2.9 residents who call our city home. We had won.
Following the judge’s ruling, Doug Ford announced the unprecedented move to invoke the notwithstanding clause, for the first time in Ontario’s history. By invoking the clause to override the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, when he had been found by the courts to be violating the constitutional rights of Ontarians, is absolutely terrifying. Doug Ford has made it clear that he will abuse his power and use the notwithstanding clause whenever he fails to get what he wants.
This decision sets a dangerous precedent. While the future of this fall’s election, and the future of our city is now once again in flux, we have to continue fighting to save our local democracy.
Torontonians are already organizing to stand up against this unacceptable move. Please join us and make your voice heard:
