Here to Stay – Joint Statement with Councillor Mike Layton on the Bloor Street Bike Lanes Victory
This Victory marks the end of the days of bikes versus cars, the end of divisive debates pitting one group against another. It is a huge victory for our city, and for the safety of all Torontonians. After 40 years, Bike Lanes on Bloor Street are here to stay.
We have taken a critical step in building a 21st century city - a city that prioritizes safe streets and active transportation. In just one year, the Bloor Street bike lanes have become the second most-used cycling lane in the entire city. We know that permanent bike lanes on Bloor Street will improve the health of Torontonians, minimize congestion and move more people better, and are an important step in fighting climate change.
Most importantly, we know that all road users feel safer. We know that the more safe infrastructure, including cycling lanes, we build, the fewer needless fatalities on the road we will see. And, the closer we come to truly realizing a Vision Zero road safety plan.
This win comes after decades of advocacy for safer cycling infrastructure on Bloor Street. Thank you to the thousands of Torontonians who showed your support through attending consultations, signing petitions, making deputations, and writing to the mayor and your local councillors.
