Island Airport - Letter to Minister of Transport
The expansion of the Island Airport has been an issue that as your local Councillor, I have vigorously opposed. I do not believe that the expansion of the Airport is in the best interests of our communities, given the significant impact it would have on waterfront revitalization, the environment, city infrastructure, and quality of life on our waterfront.
Over the last number of weeks, we have heard from the new federal government that they do not intend to re-open the Tripartite agreement to allow the expansion of the Island Airport. Today, I joined with local waterfront representatives Councillors Layton, McConnell and Fletcher, in sending a letter to the newly named Minister of Transport, asking that the government confirm their position on the expansion of the Island Airport and on reforming the Toronto Port Authority. You can find the full letter here.
With the confirmation of the government's above commitments, our priority at the City can return to managing the existing operations of the Island Airport. We are currently in the process of completing the Bathurst Quay Neighbourhood Plan, a study examining the unique character and challenges of our local community. This study will recommend initiatives to manage current traffic and congestion in the area, to better ensure safety for residents, students, community centre users and others, and to ensure that the community can continue to thrive as a waterfront neighbourhood.
I look forward to receiving confirmation of this commitment to our community and to continuing our work together.
