New Shelter at 348 Davenport - Community Open House
Two weeks ago, I joined with members of our community, including the Rt. Hon. Adrienne Clarkson, Margaret Atwood and the Annex Residents' Association, to announce new permanent shelter beds coming to 348 Davenport Road. On February 15th, please join me at a community open house to help welcome the new shelter to our neighbourhood.
The open house is an opportunity to learn about the current and proposed programming at 348 Davenport, the City's new shelter service model, and ways the community can welcome and support the shelter.
What: 348 Davenport Shelter - Community Open House
When: Thursday February 15th, 6-8:30pm
Where: Church of the Messiah, 240 Avenue Road (at Dupont)
As part of the city's efforts to address growing homelessness, a new permanent shelter site will be opened at 348 Davenport Road - a site recently acquired by the City for this purpose - in the Annex. The site will be renovated for accessibility over the coming months, during which time city staff will design the program to ensure that it meets the standards set out in the city's new shelter model. This includes integrating health supports and wrap-around support services like housing, employment, and case management. It will also include engaging residents, community organizations, and businesses to identify ways the local community can come together and support people staying at the shelter.
From now until April, the site will operate as a winter respite centre, to provide drop-in support for those seeking shelter from the cold. This is part of the city's response to the critical demand on the shelter system this winter, exacerbated by the extreme cold.
The afternoon of the initial announcement, my office also distributed a letter to the community with more information, which you can find here.
I grew-up in the Annex. Our neighbourhood is, and always has been, an inclusive community. I look forward to working with the community to welcome our new neighbours.
