Special Meeting of the Board of Health to Address Cuts to Public Health in Thursday's Provincial Budget

TORONTO – Chair of the Board of Health Councillor Joe Cressy (Ward 10, Spadina-Fort York) has called a special meeting of Toronto's Board of Health for Monday April 15th, to address significant cuts to Public Health included in the Provincial Budget released on Thursday April 11th.

"Under the headline of Modernizing Public Health Units, the Budget proposes to cut 25 local public health units across the Province," said Cressy. "Our public health units monitor water quality, conduct vaccination programs, regulate food safety, control infectious disease and more. These cuts are deeply concerning for public health in Toronto – and, they are dangerous."

In addition to cuts to the number of critical public health units, the Budget also indicates the province will be changing the current provincial-municipal funding formula for public health programs – currently funded 75% by the province, 25% by municipalities - without no additional details provided.

The Chair of the Board of Health calls special meetings as per Section 27 (2) of the Board of Health Procedures By-law.

The meeting will take place on Monday April 15th, at 1pm in the Council Chambers at Toronto City Hall.
