Statement from Councillor Joe Cressy, Chair of the Board of Health - Provincial Announcement on Consumption and Treatment Services

TORONTO – "The overdose crisis is the defining public health issue of our time. In Canada the number of deaths due to overdose continues to accelerate rapidly. More than 600 Ontarians died from overdose in just the first half of 2018, and it is now the leading cause of death of young people in Ontario.

Today the Provincial Government announced that they are closing six supervised consumption and overdose prevention sites in our province, including three in Toronto. This is unacceptable and it is wrong. In the midst of this deadly crisis, we should be opening new sites, not closing the limited number we already have.

Overdose deaths are preventable. The evidence is clear – supervised consumption sites save peoples' lives."
