New Schools in CityPlace - Now Open!
This past Monday was a big day for our city and our downtown. After years of work, our new CityPlace schools opened, with our new community centre to follow in the Spring.
I was thrilled to attend the opening of the new schools, along with Mayor John Tory, Councillor Michael Thompson, TDSB Trustee Stephanie Donaldson, TCDSB Trustee Norm Di Pasquale, MPP Chris Glover, MP Adam Vaughan, and many other community members and stakeholders who have worked for so long to make this happen.
In 2015 a TCDSB, TDSB, local community, and City team was formed. We set out to design a 21st Century school and community centre. The outcome - an integrated facility with everything from an Ontario Science Centre designed indoor playground to a rooftop basketball court.
In an increasingly vertical city, it’s an example of building neighbourhoods rather than simply building towers.
Just like we’re doing in CityPlace, as our City continues to grow we must ensure that we are building liveable neighbourhoods. That means planning for the parks, schools, childcare facilities, and community centres that make neighbourhoods thrive.
This important city-building initiative simply wouldn’t have been possible without the vision and leadership of elected representatives like Olivia Chow, Adam Vaughan, Ausma Malik, the never to be forgotten Dan Leckie, and many others.
Stay tuned for further updates on the official opening of our new community centre!
