Protecting the Toronto Islands - advancing long-term flooding solutions as soon as possible

Today, the Infrastructure and Environment Committee is discussing the study conducted in partnership with the City of Toronto and TRCA, to look at long-term flooding solutions to protect the Toronto Islands. It is critical that we move forward with the next steps in this work as soon as possible. Read my letter to the Committee, asking that we consider and advance those next steps at our next meeting of City Council on October 29th and 30th.

Earlier this year, we saw another year of record-breaking high Lake levels. As in 2017, these record breaking Lake levels not only impacted our entire Waterfront, but again threatened our treasured Toronto Islands.

Thanks to the hard work and preparation of City staff and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA), and around the clock efforts by the local community, the Islands remained open throughout this year's flooding event. However, with the highest Lake Ontairo levels on record measured during this year's event, there has been damage, and there will be impacts. In the era of a growing climate emergency, an annual sandbagging effort cannot be a long-term solution.
