 Track Reconstruction At Spadina Avenue and College Street Intersection

 April 6 to April 27, 2015

The City of Toronto and Toronto Transit Commission will be replacing streetcar tracks, lengthening platforms, resurfacing the road and reconstructing sections of the sidewalk at the intersection of College Street and Spadina Avenue. This work is required to bring the track infrastructure and nearby road/sidewalk to a state of good repair.   

We recognize that a project of this nature is disruptive to the community. We are committed to working efficiently to manage and lessen the inconvenience, and complete the work as quickly as possible.

A more detailed Construction Notice will be distributed in late March 2015. 


Work Area

From April 6 to April 27, 2015 the entire intersection of College Street and Spadina Avenue will be closed to through traffic during construction. Sidewalks will remain accessible and pedestrians/bicyclists will be detoured around the intersection. The intersection will reopen on April 27 at approximately 6:00 a.m.

Primary closure points; (see map)

  • North end: at Spadina Circle (south end).
  • East end: at Huron Street.
  • South end: at Oxford Street.
  • West end: at Robert Street.
  • Local access will be maintained to the work limits. 


Laneways and driveways that serve businesses in the area will remain accessible for deliveries or service. 

Pedestrian Access

Pedestrian access to businesses and walkways will be maintained during construction. The contractor will notify businesses directly of any other temporary disruptions.

Traffic and Parking

Residents can expect increased traffic on nearby main roads and side streets. Efforts will be made to manage traffic in the area. Parking or standing in the active work zones will not be permitted due to space requirements for construction equipment and materials.

Construction Details

This project will involve:

  • breaking concrete and excavation to remove the existing track.
  • installing new streetcar track.
  • reconstruct / lengthen the streetcar platforms on College Street to accommodate new low streetcars.
  • road resurfacing.
  • improving accessibility by reconstructing the sidewalks at each corner of the intersection. 

Preliminary Work

For a few days during the week of March 30, advance work in the form of concrete saw-cutting will be conducted in the intersection. During this work, traffic will be maintained through the intersection with temporary lane restrictions.

Work Hours

Work will typically take place from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday to Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekends. The first few days of breaking of concrete within the streetcar track area will continue to 11 p.m. To meet project timelines periods of late evening and overnight work will be conducted during phases of rail installation and overhead work by the TTC. This will consist of moving rail into position, rail installation, rail welding and grinding.


TTC Service Changes

March 29:      510 Spadina streetcars replaced with buses. 510 Spadina buses will run between Spadina Station (at Bloor Street) and Queens Quay/Spadina loop.

April 6:           510 Spadina buses and 506/306 Carlton streetcars will begin to divert during the intersection closure. (See transit map for routing). Note: 510 Spadina customers can transfer to 509 Harbourfront streetcars on Queens Quay at Spadina Avenue to continue trip to Union Station.

April 27:         At approximately 6:00 a.m. Spadina buses and Carlton streetcars will resume operating through intersection.

May 10:                      510 Spadina streetcar service is restored - regular routing.


Curb-side Waste Collection

Please follow your normal routine. If required, the contractor will move bins to an appropriate location and return them. Please ensure you label your bins with your address.
